Description
Signed fine art giclée print
One of our favourite walks since we’ve had children (because it’s flat and pushchair friendly!) is out past Seafield House (the ‘haunted house’) at Westward Ho! and along the top of Cornborough Cliffs towards Abbotsham. We’ve done it in all weathers – I’ve even sketched there with my artist friends in the drizzle!
Some days the rocks are jagged and unwelcoming, the sea grey and austere, but the day I took the reference photo for this painting, it was turquoise, shimmering water pooling between the rocks and sea pinks bobbing their tufty heads in the warm breeze. It was dry and still; I loved the texture and colour of the arid foreground, peppered with pink sea thrift, contrasting with the blues of the rocks and sea.
I painted this seascape in gouache, building it up layer by layer, starting with blocky shapes and finally adding tiny details – the highlights on the breaking waves in the distance, the dainty sea pinks, the dark fissures in the rocks. I doubted it as I always do during the ugly stage, then enjoyed the process of developing it slowly, like a slow-mo version of watching a photograph develop in a darkroom.
This is a lovely seaside print for a home close to the sea, or as a reminder of a special holiday. Why not pick a few of my North Devon prints and display as a pair or a small collection? ‘Pebble Ridge at Sunset’ is also available in A4 and A5, or choose from some of my smaller prints such as ‘Sand and Sea’, ‘Still Water to Instow’, ‘Sunset at Westward Ho!’ or ‘Sunset Pebbles’.
Available in A4 and A5.
