Shortly after the sun has sunk below the horizon on a balmy summer’s evening at Westward Ho!, the sky is flooded with a rush of deep mauve and rich umber. The hazy heat of the day melds the colours which reflect off the still-warm water pooling around the weathered wooden posts.

There’s nothing like the atmosphere of the beach at sunset, and Westward Ho! in North Devon is the perfect place to enjoy the final moments of the day. In this gouache painting, I tried to capture the sky, heavy with haze, and the feeling of the sun going down on a perfect beach day.

This print is part of a series of coastal paintings which I’ve created inspired by the beaches and landscapes around my home in North Devon.
